Amazon Brand Registry and Hijackers: A Step-by-Step Protection Plan

A hijacker is another seller who lists on your product page, often with a cheaper copy or a counterfeit, and takes your Buy Box. Every sale they make is one you lose, and every bad review their product earns lands on your listing. The good news: Amazon gives brand owners real tools to stop this. Here is the plan we follow for clients.
Step 1: Get your trademark and Brand Registry in place
Amazon Brand Registry is the foundation of brand protection. To enroll you need a registered trademark, or in many marketplaces a pending trademark application, for the brand name shown on your products or packaging.
- File the trademark in the country where you sell (for the US, with the USPTO).
- Make sure the brand name on Amazon, on the product and on the trademark match exactly.
- Once enrolled, you get more control over listing content, plus access to A+ content, Sponsored Brands, Brand Analytics and the protection tools below.
Step 2: Confirm you really have a hijacker
- Check “Other sellers on Amazon” on your listing.
- Note the seller name, price, fulfillment method and when they appeared.
- Do a test buy. Having the product in hand, with photos of the differences, makes your report much stronger.
Step 3: Report it through the right channel
- Counterfeit or trademark misuse: use the Report a Violation tool in Brand Registry, with your test-buy evidence.
- Listing content changed by others: correct it through Brand Registry, since brand owners have contribution priority.
- Keep reports factual. Only report real infringement. False reports can put your own account at risk.
Step 4: Make your listing harder to copy
- Transparency: Amazon’s unit-level serialization program, where available, so units without a valid code cannot be sold.
- Branded packaging and product: your logo on the product itself makes copies easy to prove.
- Bundles and variations: a unique set or size is harder for a generic seller to match.
- Controlled distribution: if you sell wholesale, agree on who may sell on Amazon and keep written agreements.
Step 5: Monitor every week
Hijackers come back. Check your top listings weekly for new sellers, price drops and content changes, and act fast. A few days of a hijacker on the Buy Box can cost more than months of monitoring.
What it costs to wait
Unprotected listings lose sales, suffer from bad reviews they did not earn, and lose control of their own content. Brand Registry and a simple weekly routine fix most of this.
